Creating Lasting Positive Change

We all reach moments in life when we pause and realise something needs to shift—whether it’s how we react, how we feel, or how we show up for ourselves and others. Change is never easy, especially when long-standing habits and behaviours feel automatic. But the good news is that it is possible. With awareness, planning, and self-compassion, creating lasting positive change is within reach.

Step One: Reflect on What Needs to Change

The first step in making any change is to sit with your behaviours and reactions for a moment. Think about what you’d like to do differently and envision the outcomes. Ask yourself, “What happens if I do change vs. what happens if I don’t?” Set some personal goals and benchmarks and picture how life might improve if you take these steps.

If you’re unsure, try making a list of pros and cons around the change you want to make. If the cons feel overwhelming, problem-solve each one with a realistic solution. For example, if you tend to drink too much with certain friends, your plan might involve setting expectations with them—or taking a break until you’re more confident in your new path.

Consider the Timing and Your Readiness

Sometimes, even when we want to change, the timing may not be right. This isn’t about procrastination—it’s about setting yourself up for success. If you’re facing a stressful event or know you’ll be tempted, it’s okay to set a start date that gives you a better chance of success. Just make sure it’s soon, and commit to it.

Readiness is a key factor in creating lasting positive change. Your list of benefits—the “why” behind your goal—can motivate you when you’re tempted to give up.

Be Kind and Celebrate Small Wins

Change doesn’t happen all at once. If you succeed in staying calm during one argument but slip up the next day, that’s okay. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t. Behaviour change, like any new skill, takes practice. We’re often hardest on ourselves, so take a moment to view your progress from an outsider’s perspective. How would you speak to a friend going through the same thing?

Journaling can be incredibly helpful during this process. It helps you track patterns and gives you something tangible to reflect on as you move forward.

Equip Yourself With the Right Tools For Creating Lasting Change

To reach your goal, you may need to build new skills—whether it’s relaxation techniques, assertiveness strategies, or ways to manage emotions. Consider having a support buddy or mentor, someone you trust to listen, support, and guide you without judgement. This accountability can make a big difference when motivation dips.
