Celebrating World Public Service Day
As we celebrate World Public Service Day, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on my nearly ten-year journey within the Victorian Public Service (VPS), and specifically, my role with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).
Being part of the public service means being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s about contributing to systems and services that directly impact people’s everyday lives—something I feel incredibly passionate about. Serving the public isn’t just a job; it’s a purpose.

A workplace that values inclusion
Throughout my time in the VPS, I’ve had the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. Working in a department that values inclusion has made a world of difference to me as a person with disability. I’ve experienced not just policy-level support, but genuine, on-the-ground commitment from my direct managers and executive leaders. Their encouragement and openness have allowed me to bring my whole self to work—something every employee deserves.
I’m especially proud of my role as Chairperson of TaPABILITY, our Employee Resource Group for people with disability and carers. This group plays a key part in driving positive change across the department, offering peer support and amplifying the voices of those with lived experience. What makes DTP stand out is its top-down commitment to inclusion—from our Secretary right through to teams on the ground. These aren’t just words on a page; they’re actions embedded into culture.
Working in the public service is about community
I know that public service doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. There can be a perception that it’s not the most exciting or dynamic career path. But for me, working in the VPS means being a part of a community that is working for the community. I’m proud of what I do every day—helping people, solving problems, and playing a role in making Victoria more accessible and inclusive.
Being able to contribute both in my core role and through my advocacy work gives me a deep sense of purpose. And on World Public Service Day, I want to say thank you—to my colleagues, mentors, allies, and community—for walking alongside me on this path.
Here’s to continuing to build a public service that reflects and represents all Victorians. I’m proud to be a part of it.
